Introduction to Homelessness Law Training

There are so many myths about housing law that stop people getting housed – ‘You don’t have local connection!’, ‘You’re intentionally homeless!’, ‘You’re not in priority need!’

Often these myths are unwittingly perpetuated by professionals who set out to help people affected by homelessness, and yet homelessness law is the single most powerful tool available to get people housed in safe, suitable housing, and to maximise their choice throughout the process.

This training has been designed to equip professionals who support people who are rough sleeping, sofa surfing, at risk of domestic abuse, or who cannot afford their home, so that they can get quickly housed, using a working understanding or priority need, intentional homelessness, local connection and the legal definition of homelessness itself.

On completion of this course you will have:

  • An awareness and basic understanding of Homelessness Legislation.
  • An understanding of the legal definitions of homelessness, priority need, intentional homelessness and local connection.
  • The information needed to know when a homeless application is appropriate.
  • A practical understanding of how to help someone make a strong application for housing assistance.
  • An awareness of other statutory help relevant to homeless people.

Demonstrating Priority Need for Homeless Applications

Perverse Non-Priority decisions are probably the single biggest source of injustice for vulnerable people who have lost their home and who are trying to get help from their local council. Unfortunately, the more vulnerable you are, the easier it is for councils to get away with it.

The good news is that the legal definition of priority need is a relatively low threshold, and many of the housing officers making these decisions have never had adequate training on it, meaning it is often easy to spot errors and challenge them on that basis.

This training has been designed to equip professionals to recognise when someone is in priority need, know how to formulate the argument for priority need, and identify common flaws in perverse non-priority decisions.

One completion of this course you will have:

  • An awareness and basic understanding of the definition of priority need.
  • An understanding the caselaw that defines vulnerability.
  • The information needed to know when someone is likely to be in priority need.
  • A practical understanding of how to help someone make a strong argument for priority need.
  • An awareness of common counter-arguments that councils use,

Data Protection Training – Annual Staff Refresher

Many professionals lack confidence with data protection law because they’ve never received clear training that relates specifically to situations dealing with vulnerable adults.

As a result data is both shared when it shouldn’t be and not shared when it should, in ways that can result the rights of individuals being ignored, and in compensation pay outs and regulatory action.

This half-day training covers the information that managers and frontline workers need to be confident in processing personal data lawfully so that those using services can have as much control over their situation as possible and so that breaches are avoided.

On completion of this course you will have:

  • an understanding of the definition of special category data and the different lawful bases available to process it
  • clearly defined dos and don’ts of storing, sharing and destroying personal data
  • knowledge of the steps organisations should take before processing special category data of vulnerable people, and what makes a good
  • an understanding of the security measures required to keep data processing secure
  • an awareness of the rights those using services have and how they can use the law to be kept in control of their future options.
